Ghosts at the Circus Room in the Historic Davenport Hotel, Spokane, WA

Room 708, previously Room 730, is the oldest and the only guest room at the Historic Davenport Hotel that was not gutted during the remodel completed by the Worthys in 2000.

This oversized room, located near the freight and service elevators, started out as a "sample room" for the salesmen's sample cases brought through the extra-wide doors.

In 1935, it was converted to host parties and meetings and painted with circus-themed scenes in honor of Louie Davenport's friend, Walla Walla native and businessman Harper Joy, who traveled with the Ringling Brothers Circus every summer as a clown.

The characters in the scenes are friends and contemporaries of Mr. Joy. If you look closely, you will find Louie Davenport and the Worthys, who were added later, among some of the people.

The Circus Room was turned into a guest room around 2011 and is a favorite of many, including myself. It seems that the friendly ghosts at the Davenport Hotel agree.

On my first stay, Psychic Medium Jane Stewart of the Ghost411.net podcast saw a young boy spirit in the room. I got responses on the voice recorder to validate that someone was present.

Later, while going over pictures and videos from my two visits to the Circus Room with Psychic Medium Jennifer Von Behren, she saw a modestly dressed, brown-haired, younger, short, and thin female wearing a gray dress and a hat. Jennifer felt that she was from the 1930s. Her name was possibly Claire. She prefers the corner by the window near the bathroom.

She has been there for a while and was very happy to have a friendly guest to talk to. Claire is a very smiley and social lady who goes to other areas in the hotel as well, especially the main area.

She used to work as a volunteer assistant organizer. She said that there used to be records in the "basement," but they burned in a fire. Apparently, Mr. Davenport liked to keep records in different places and not all in one location.

Claire was able to turn on the flashlight for responses but was having trouble with the music box and other equipment, so she brought in a "few" friends to give them a try.

Claire's friend George, a heavier-set, shorter man with a mustache, came by later with a taller man. The taller man was thin, wore a hat, and had died in a fire.

Next came a nun-looking lady, who took turns with George using the flashlight.

Another male spirit, wearing a black outfit with a jacket and clean-cut appearance, whom they called the manager, came in as well.

Next, a curly, brown-haired female spirit came in. Her hair was "poofy" in the front and pulled tightly into a bun at the back of her neck.

She looked like a possible singer.

They were all fascinated with the flashlight and were having a lot of fun laughing while trying to get the music box to turn on by dancing in front of it, but with no luck. Claire kept them all in the corner by the window.

Before she called the other spirits in, she told me not to be afraid if I saw shadows and movement. All the ghosts in the Davenport are friendly, she said, except the grumpy man in the basement, who makes a lot of noise.

Claire also said that there is a little boy in the hotel whom a female spirit took under her wing. The boy is happy.

Claire also said that Bing Crosby still sings to them.

When I asked about Al Capone, the female singer rolled her eyes dramatically, and the male spirit they called the manager said, "They are always having parties." Everyone used the tunnels during Prohibition.

The singer called one of the bartenders "eye candy."

As for Amelia Earhart, Claire said that she was louder than people thought.

I was able to get many responses on the voice recorder during both of my stays.

The ghosts at the Davenport Hotel are very friendly and willing to talk to those who wish. However, they respect the privacy of the guests and let them enjoy this amazing room in peace.

The Circus Room sleeps many people and is a great place for families. The Davenport Hotel is currently offering a special on this room through Dec. 31 that includes dining credit, cocktails, cookies, keepsakes, and more. It's a great time to experience the magic of the Circus Room and the Historic Davenport Hotel.
